The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

Your responsibilities include:

This position offers you the unique opportunity to work at the interface between modern software concepts and innovative materials research as part of the FONDA joint project. Your task will be to develop and apply workflow solutions within a digital development environment that enable the following:

  • user-friendly handling of data analysis workflows that reproducibly link raw data with the prediction of figures, diagrams and reports
  • the execution of multiscale material simulations with the aim of understanding mechanisms in materials
  • the management of interactions between different workflows that, e.g., describe processes on different scales
  • the semantic description of digital processes based on domain-specific ontologies
  • the integration of AI methods for controlling and executing workflows
  • collaboration with various stakeholders from the FONDA project community

Your qualifications:

  • Completed scientific university degree (diploma/master's) in computer science, physics, chemistry, materials science or engineering
  • Doctorate, preferably with a ‘good’ grade
  • Solid knowledge of (research) data management, workflow systems and their user interfaces
  • Experience in the use of AI methods, including large language models
  • Very good knowledge of a programming language (e.g. Python, C++)
  • Knowledge of the use of semantic concepts is an advantage
  • Experience in the simulation of materials science processes is an advantage
  • Publications on the above-mentioned areas in scientific journals
  • Very good verbal and written communication skills in English or German
  • Good communication and information skills, initiative/commitment and ability to take action, decision-making skills and ability, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, as well as flexibility
