The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Design, support, consulting, and collaboration on R&D projects in Department 2 for research software development
  • Design, configuration, and programming of process control technology (e.g., SIEMENS PCS 7)
  • Setting up, maintaining, and operating container solutions for scientific computing, agent systems, and AI systems in general in the department (e.g., using Podman)
  • Building expertise and workflows for research software development
  • Continuous maintenance of software projects/research codes in Department 2
  • Setting up and operating laboratory networks and the PCs they contain in Department 2
  • Specification, preparation, workflows, documentation of virtual desktop instances
  • Development and maintenance of division- and department-specific documentation (including in Redmine)
  • Onboarding of new research assistants in Department 2 on scientific computing, research software development, etc.
  • Continuous coordination with BAM's central IT department

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed university degree (diploma (FH)/bachelor's degree) in computer science or comparable field, or proven equivalent skills and experience (IT specialist with several years of professional experience)
  • Experience in (research) software development in object-oriented programming languages, e.g., Python, Julia, Rust
  • Experience in CI/CD pipelines
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux system administration
  • Experience/knowledge in setting up and operating database systems
  • Network knowledge
  • Knowledge of setting up and operating container solutions, e.g., using Docker, Apptainer, or Podman, is desirable
  • Experience in configuring and programming process control technology (e.g., SIEMENS) is an advantage
  • Basic knowledge of modern AI/ML software frameworks is an advantage
  • Knowledge of setting up and operating web services is welcome
  • Very good verbal and written communication skills in English are desirable
  • Good communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team/willingness to cooperate as well as willingness to learn
