The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

Your responsibilities include:

Design and implementation of a test rig for operating high-temperature sodium batteries (research cells). This includes the following subtasks:

  • Design of a securely sealable cell housing for application temperatures up to 300 °C
  • Commissioning and coordination of the manufacture of the housings
  • Design, procurement and commissioning of heating devices for operating the research cells at defined temperatures of 300 °C
  • Manufacture of ceramic solid electrolytes as separators for the research cells, using a classic process chain involving dry pressing and milling, as well as an innovative approach using additive manufacturing (robocasting)
  • Implementation of a process for assembling research cells by inserting the solid electrolyte and filling the cells, as well as for reliably sealing the cell housings
  • Commissioning of the test rig by cyclically charging and discharging the constructed research cells at temperatures up to 300 °C
  • Collaboration in scientific administration
  • Collaboration in the preparation of scientific publications (peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers) and in the acquisition of third-party funding

Your qualifications:

  • Above-average degree (diploma/master's) in engineering or science in the field of materials engineering, ceramics or comparable
  • Several years of experience in the practical application of ceramic manufacturing methods
  • Experience in the field of additive manufacturing is an advantage
  • Very good verbal and written communication skills in English; good German skills are an advantage
  • Good presentation and publication skills
  • Willingness to travel
  • Good communication and information skills, goal-oriented and structured approach to work, initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
