The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

Based on atomistic methods and machine learning, innovative simulation workflows for high-entropy materials are to be developed in order to utilise their chemical diversity specifically for improved performance, durability and safety of these materials when used for key technologies, e.g. in the energy sector.

  • Initiation and realisation of research and development in the field of chemically complex materials
  • Development of ab initio based multiscale simulations for thermo-chemo-mechanical coupling effects on planar defects in these materials
  • Investigations on the coupling of functional and mechanical material properties
  • Advancement of simulation environments for data-driven material design
  • Conception of topics for young scientists and their supervision in the context of their research activities
  • Providing impetus for and acquiring third-party funded research projects
  • Shaping participation in national and international collaborative projects and digitalization initiatives such as NFDI-MatWerk

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or a comparable subject
  • Very good PhD
  • Extensive knowledge in the field of ab initio or atomistic simulations on materials engineering or materials science issues
  • Experience with the simulation of complex chemical materials
  • Experience with the simulation of materials under real conditions (e.g. finite temperatures, mechanical stress, corrosive environments)
  • Demonstrable expertise in scientific work at the interface of experiment and theory
  • Knowledge in the use of machine learning and other AI methods
  • Experience in research data and workflow management
  • Very good knowledge of a programming language (e.g. Python, C++)
  • Experience in the acquisition and management of R&D projects and corresponding scientific project management
  • Experience in the supervision of young scientists
  • Numerous publications in the above-mentioned fields in highly cited journals
  • Very good command of German and English
  • Experience in the combination with higher-scale methods is an advantage
  • Good communication and information behaviour, initiative/commitment and ability, willingness and ability to make decisions, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate as well as flexibility

We offer:
