The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.
The “Non-Destructive Testing” department develops radiological, acoustic, electromagnetic, optical, fiber optic, thermographic and sensor-based methods for the non-destructive testing of materials, components and technical systems. Using methodological approaches of machine learning and artificial intelligence, multimodal information from NDT in BAM's subject areas contributes to technical safety in a variety of technical applications today.

Your responsibilities include:
- Strategic development of concepts for research and development of the department in non-destructive testing with a focus on multimodal methods in the subject areas of BAM and especially the digitization of NDT
- Management of the “Non-Destructive Testing” department with approx. 130 employees in the specialist areas of “Sensors, Measurement and Testing Methods”, “Non-Destructive Testing Methods for Civil Engineering”, “Thermographic Methods”, “Acoustic and Electromagnetic Methods”, “X-ray Imaging” and “Fiber Optic Sensors”
- Participation in BAM's Board of Directors to ensure BAM's future viability and active involvement in shaping change processes
- Active participation in the coordination of BAM's infrastructure topic area
- Ensuring interdisciplinary and overarching cooperation within BAM as well as with universities and research institutions, industry and, in the case of statutory tasks, with the responsible ministries and administrative bodies
- Participation in national and international networks to position BAM as a departmental research institution
Participation in BAM's Directorate includes developing concepts and strategies to ensure BAM's future viability and actively shaping change processes. Through your involvement in national and international networks, you will contribute to the positioning of BAM as a departmental research institution. Business trips in Germany and abroad are a matter of course for you.
Your qualifications:
- Completed scientific university degree (Master's/Diploma) in physics, electrical engineering, materials science and engineering or a comparable field and doctorate with very good results as well as habilitation or comparable scientific achievements resulting from professional activity in a research field relevant to BAM.
- International experience and several years of professional experience with particular relevance to non-destructive testing in various applications and their digital transformation are desirable
- Experience in the strategic orientation and management of larger scientific areas as well as in the application for and implementation of demanding research and development projects
- Very good knowledge of science management
- Experience with communication at the interface between science, business, politics and administration
- Basic knowledge and understanding of leadership contexts in larger groups of people (professional and disciplinary leadership)
- Team-oriented working style with good communication/information skills and a high level of empathy as well as integration behavior and gender equality
- A high degree of initiative/commitment, willingness/ability to make decisions, goal-oriented and structured way of working, conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking as well as assertiveness/negotiating skills
- Business fluent in written and spoken German and English

Applicants who meet the requirements will generally receive a salary in accordance with grade B 3 BBesO. For applicants who do not meet the career requirements for federal civil servants at the time of recruitment, a corresponding non-tariff salary will be agreed. The trial period in accordance with § 34 BLV or the probationary period in accordance with § 31 TVöD must be observed.
