The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Mechanochemical valorization/functionalization of lignins
  • Characterization of raw materials as well as functionalized and cross-linked adsorber materials with the appropriate analytical techniques in combination with method development to ensure critical parameters for later use as PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds) adsorber material. These include, for example, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR, NIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H, 13C, 31P-NMR) and various methods for surface and pore analysis such as gas adsorption and mercury porosimetry or microscopic techniques. TGA, DSC and AFM are considered for the investigation of mechanical and physicochemical properties.
  • Accompanying the work with statistical and dynamic experiments on adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetics. Here, the coupling of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry is largely used as the analytical technique.
  • Responsible for the research project as well as organizing and ensuring cooperation with the project partners
  • External presentation of activities through publication of research results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, presentation at trade fairs and conferences as well as other formats
  • Acquisition of third-party funding

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies (diploma / master's degree) in a natural science or engineering discipline with a doctorate
  • Experience in the field of polymer analysis and mechanochemistry
  • Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding
  • Experience in the supervision of junior scientists
  • Proven experience in publication and presentation of scientific results
  • Very good knowledge of German and English
  • Good communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/willingness and ability to work hard, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn
