The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Your responsibilities include:
The position holder will be responsible for the digitization of materials science in the division, with a focus on data processing and workflow development. The position holder will:
- work as an independent materials science data scientist, including responsibility for the division's data management, data standards, and digital science products;
- develop automated experimental evaluation programs, generate (reference) data sets, and publish them;
- apply digitization tools and platforms to high-temperature thermomechanical testing data and devices;
- apply large language models (LLM) and natural language processing (NLP) to materials science and its ontologies;
- apply and implement machine learning models and frameworks to perform high-level interpolation and extrapolation of research and engineering data;
- implement the connection of the experimental infrastructure and the transfer of data to a central research data management system;
- support the development of automated and high-throughput testing methods for novel metallic high-temperature alloys;
- publish and present research results; and
- apply for and lead third-party funded research projects.
Your qualifications:
- Successful scientific university degree (Masters Degree/ Diploma) specialising in materials science, mechanical engineering, materials physics or comparable and a very good PhD
- Fulfillment of the career law requirements for federal civil servants
- Specialized in the application of digitization tools and platforms in materials science
- Expert knowledge in experimental materials mechanics
- Experience in the application of modern data-driven methods, such as ML and LLM
- Programming skills for the development of scripts and evaluation tools as well as hardware/software interfaces
- Excellent publications in peer-reviewed journals in the field of materials science research and digitization
- Very good command of German and English
- Good communication and information behaviour, initiative/commitment and ability to make decisions, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate as well as flexibility
