We offer interdisciplinary damage analyses on complex systems in transportation (railroads, ships, motor vehicles and aircraft), mechanical and plant engineering, medical technology, implants, steel construction, hazardous materials and safety engineering.

Reference procedures

In coordination with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), we perform tasks as the national institute for metrology in chemistry. This includes in particular the development and provision of reference methods and reference materials. Furthermore, we are strongly involved in the further development of the German system for traceability of chemical analyses.

We have numerous methods, test procedures and test laboratories and provide reference procedures that evaluate the accuracy and reliability of measurement procedures. Companies can use reference procedures provided by us as testing standards. The provision of reference procedures is demand- and task-oriented.

Our Technical Safety Test Site (TTS) in Brandenburg offers the possibility for realistic tests and large-scale tests on a 1:1 scale with special test facilities. The test site has two fire test stands, a test field for investigating fire and explosion hazards, a blasting site with a variety of test facilities such as a firewall system, blast and windrow chambers, and a drop test facility.

Reference materials

A reference material is a material or substance of sufficient homogeneity in which one or more characteristic values are specified so precisely that it can be used for the calibration of measuring instruments, the evaluation of measurement procedures or the assignment of substance values. Reference materials are indispensable when it comes to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of measurement results.

We develop and certify reference materials to ensure correct and reliable measurement results. The BAM Webshop offers our customers from industry, government and research access to over 400 materials from various fields such as iron/steel, environment, food, polymers and many more.

Our collection of reference organisms includes microorganisms and insects that can be used for standard testing and testing of industrial products or can be commissioned from us.

Interlaboratory tests

We prove our competence as a national institute for metrology in chemistry and the reliability of our results in numerous international interlaboratory comparisons. In addition, the BAM laboratories involved are regularly audited by DAkkS.

Interlaboratory comparisons are an effective tool to establish the comparability of measurement and test results of different laboratories. The objectives are the validation of test methods, the characterization of reference materials and the proof of measurement capability, for example in audits. For selected fields of competence we offer interlaboratory comparisons, some of which are performed at regular intervals (for example "contaminated sites").
