Centre for Quality Assurance - Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances (CEQAT-DGHS)

Proficiency testing

CEQAT-DGHS

Avoiding chemical accidents through correct test results

An explosion in a chemical plant, a fire on a freighter … there can be various causes.

Avoiding accidents starts with determining the hazardous properties of the chemicals in the laboratory. For this special purpose, standardised testing methods have been developed and are used worldwide.

Safety experts must be able to fully rely on the test results obtained. Responsible test laboratories carry out extensive quality assurance measures for this reason.

CEQAT-DGHS supports the further development of the quality assurance measures through an interlaboratory comparison programme for testing the physical hazards of chemicals and through training and organizing events. CEQAT-DGHS established in 2007, is run by Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), Berlin, in cooperation with the QuoData Gesellschaft für Qualitätsmanagement und Statistik mbH, Dresden, and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Braunschweig.

CEQAT-DGHS - Interlaboratory comparisons and QA schemes

CEQAT-DGHS - Interlaboratory comparisons and QA schemes

Interlaboratory comparisons are a crucial element of a laboratory's quality system. Participation in intercomparisons is explicitly recommended by ISO/IEC 17025 on the competence of testing laboratories.

Centre for quality assurance for testing of dangerous goods and hazardous substances (CEQAT-DGHS)

CEQAT-DGHS offers you participation in the following QA schemes:

Hazardous substances

Test methods: Council regulation (EC) No 440/2008 and methods referred to in CLP (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008)

Dangerous goods

Test methods: United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria.

Regular participation is important!

The interlaboratory comparisons for assessing explosion danger, flammability, fire-promoting / oxidising characteristics and corrosion behaviour should be carried out regularly and with worldwide participation.

CEQAT-DGHS - Participation and Registration

Participation in the interlaboratory comparisons of the CEQAT is open to laboratories throughout the world.

All laboratory data and all data evaluation will be dealt with anonymously. No other participant will be able to assign results to another laboratory.

Each participant will receive a certificate which allows the identification of their laboratory's results through a lab code.

Registration

If you are interested in participating in the CEQAT-DGHS interlaboratory comparison programme, please respond to the Call for expression of interest and fill out the form. Registration form Please send the completed form to Dr. Peter Lueth, BAM, either via fax or email:

Fax: +49 30 8104 1207
Email: Peter.Lueth@bam.de

Your registration is required by the organiser of the tests in order to prepare the necessary number of samples. It is also needed for the financial calculation of charges.

With your consent, we will put you on our mailing list and inform you on upcoming intercomparisons.

CEQAT-DGHS - Recommendation

Recommendation from BAM and PTB

Method EN 15188:2007 “Determination of the spontaneous ignition behaviour of dust accumulations”

Based on the interlaboratory comparisons, the experience gained and the actual results, the following measures / actions are recommended to improve the execution of the method: EN 15188:2007 “Determination of the spontaneous ignition behaviour of dust accumulations”:

Determine the effective volume of the sample baskets by means of glass beads
(diameter ~ 0.3 mm)

Due to the manufacturing tolerances of sample baskets and differences in the effective volume, each basket shall be determined by using glass beads (diameter ~ 0.3 mm). If other materials are used, it shall be documented which materials are applied.
