Innovative Advanced Materials
BAM is engaged in the research and development of innovative advanced materials, which are regarded as key technologies for solving many of today's challenges and play a central role in technological progress and social prosperity. Our goal is to develop new materials that make products safer and more efficient.
The focus is particularly on the following three areas:
- Design and synthesis of innovative advanced materials
- Nano and advanced materials as reference materials
- Automation of workflows with the help of Self-Driving Labs (SDLs) and Materials Acceleration Platforms (MAPs)
Design and synthesis of innovative advanced materials
We conduct research into the design and manufacture of innovative advanced materials for use in complex systems. In doing so, we develop sustainable high-performance materials that minimize risks to industry, the environment, and society.
Nano and advanced materials as reference materials
The second focus is on providing test and reference materials, reference products, and reference data from the field of nano and advanced materials.
Certified reference materials pose a particular challenge in this context. A certified reference material can only be certified after a long-term stability study. Test materials, on the other hand, are characterized in terms of specific properties and made available, but certification only takes place during the service life of the materials. Test materials/reference materials are requested from various areas of research, regulation, and industry.
The requirements vary greatly, so that very different materials must be made available.

Automation
In close coordination with the Materials Acceleration Platform Center MAPs@BAM, the synthesis and optimization of advanced materials supported by laboratory automation and machine learning is being advanced. This enables the accelerated development of innovative materials with high reproducibility and safety.
