The Material and Surface Technologies (6.2, Lichterfelde West) division is looking for motivated students for a master thesis on laboratory automation related projects:

Development of an automated platform for materials synthesis and characterization

We are building with an interdisciplinary team a modular robotics platform for AI-driven materials discovery. Our aim is to develop modules for different sample preparation and characterization tasks orchestrated in an automated platform that will be run by a machine learning based design of experiments. The modules include liquid handling, surface charac-terization and electrochemistry to name a few.

If you are interested in joining our agile team, we have many small packages in these modules that you can be involved in. The characterization tasks always include the automation of the method, as well as the data analysis, so they can be regarded as small independent projects with dedicated case studies suitable for thesis work. Or you can be involved in the development of machine learning algorithms, the brain of our platform, by implementing and testing different approaches.

It is also possible to perform a compulsory practical course (Praktikum) in one of these pro-jects before starting with the master thesis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and enrollment in a Master’s degree program in computer science, engineering, or any related field
  • Very good knowledge of Python incl. PyQt, Python SDKs
  • Experience in working with collaborative software projects using version control sys-tems, preferably GitHub/GitLab
  • Interest in the application of programming to material science questions, as well as in topics such as robotic platforms and machine learning
  • Previous experience in agile software development would be advantageous
  • Good command of English language
  • Ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary team
