The Divisions Material and Surface Technologies (6.2, Lichterfelde West) is seeking a student for a master thesis on:

“Characterization of aluminium alloys and their corrosion properties”

Aluminium alloys are essential materials in aerospace and automotive industries because of their high strength-to-weight ratio. However, the presence of intermetallic particles (IMPs) makes them prone to galvanic corrosion. Understanding how microstructural features influ-ence corrosion processes is key to improving alloy performance and durability.
This thesis will focus on the study of corrosion processes in aluminium alloys using standard electrochemical techniques combined with ex situ and in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) for structural characterization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, materials science, physical chemistry, or related fields
  • Experience in electrochemical methods
  • Interest in surface characterization methods; practical experiences are advantageous
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good English skills
