Historical overview of the reference materials production at BAM
Source: BAM
In 1912, the first reference material (RM), a standard steel for carbon determination, prepared by BAM - at that time still the Royal Materials Testing Institute - appeared. Since then, the range of RM has grown steadily and covers more and more areas of metrology. The demand and requirements for reference materials continue to increase due to the increasing requirements of laboratory accreditation for quality control and metrological traceability as well as the development of new analytical methods.
This paper gives an overview of general developments in the field of reference materials as well as developments in selected application areas in which BAM has its main focus as an RM manufacturer. These are, among others, inorganic and metal analysis, gas analysis, analysis of food and consumer goods. In addition, developments in the areas of optical spectroscopy, especially fluorescence methods, and nanomaterials are described.
