On 9th January an information workshop on the “MaterialDigital” call for proposals initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) took place at the headquarters of the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM).

The innovation platform “MaterialDigital” was already launched on 1st July 2019. It is paving the way for digitalisation in materials science and engineering. The goal is to set up a virtual room for material data and for modelling and simulation approaches. In the future, this should be quickly and safely accessible to the materials science community and partners from the industry. In addition to BAM, the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM, the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology KIT, the Leibniz Institute for Materials Engineering – IWT, and the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung are involved in the innovation platform.

200 representatives from numerous universities and non-university research institutions who want to participate in the open tender visited the information workshop. The event served to coordinate between the applicants and the platform. The project management agency, VDI-Technologiezentrum, provided information on the objectives and possibilities of the BMBF MaterialDigital initiative as well as on the planned development of the platform. Subsequently, the participating research institutions presented their specific project ideas.
