My name is Shu-Han Wu and I am currently a PhD student in Dangerous Goods Packagings division. My research at BAM focuses on the synthesis and characterization of novel, functional carbon materials as anodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with the goal of improving reversibility and specific capacities. I believe that through my research, SIBs can one day benefit our daily lives and be affordable in most countries.

The biggest challenge I faced was adjusting to a new culture while studying abroad. Simple tasks, such as attending lab meetings, shopping, or finding an apartment, can become a real challenge in a new environment. Sometimes this is further complicated by language barriers. But what I haven’t forgotten is that life depends on how you react to it. When I learn to embrace a new culture, it is a pleasure and broadens my horizons.

A tip for girls and women in science: If you are interested in science and would like to go abroad for further study, I would say don’t hesitate and you’ll learn things you never knew as long as you step out of your comfort zone.
