"My name is Andrea Koerdt and I have been employed as a microbiologist at BAM since 2016. I am working on microbiologically influenced corrosion by methanogenic archaea and sulfate reducing bacteria. I decided to pursue a degree in biology at a relatively early age, as I have always been fascinated by understanding how life arises and how it works.

Unlike other scientists, I have changed my scientific focus very often throughout my career. First I worked with bacterial flagella, then with biofilms, then with oral pathogens and now I work with metals. This has allowed me to pick up knowledge in relatively broad spectrum.

In my own field, I have not been able to observe women facing any major challenges. But that can also be explained by the fact that there is a larger proportion of women in microbiology than in other disciplines. What makes me wonder, however, is why most microbiology professors are nevertheless male. My advice to all women is to fulfill your dreams, don't let anyone discourage you or convince you that you can't do it.”
