My name is Irina Heitmann, I studied energy science and engineering and I’m now a PhD student in the Dangerous Goods Packagings division. My research topic is the thermal stability of the electrolytes and the solid electrolyte interphase in Lithium Ion batteries and their behavior during thermal runaway. With my research in the fields of material science and proceeding in understanding the dangerous behavior of LIBs, it might be possible to once influence the thermal runaway and make batteries safer. For the electrification of the transport sector this a very important issue.
My biggest challenge in my research is, that I’m coming from a very different field of studies (engineering) why I have to learn a lot about chemistry and characterization methods of that I’ve never heard before. But at BAM we have a big network of very helpful people who make it easier and fun.
During my journey of life, I always had my parents and good teachers or professors (in the subjects that mattered) on my side, supporting me in my decisions and teaching me technical things. From being a tutor for kids from all backgrounds, I know that not everyone grew up so privileged. But this is an extra challenge that makes you stronger.
Do what you love and what you live for. Don’t let social norms and expectations distract you from your path. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You won’t become happy when you set yourself too high standards and goals, as you would be too disappointed when you don’t reach them. No matter if regarding your private life or career: Try to reach feasible goals and always mind your soul and inner balance. Only a happy and clear mind can focus and improve. And: No matter what you do, do it with confidence, believe in yourself and take your time.
