Process and plant safety is often only insufficienty adressed in process engineering curricula. This certificate course provides a comprehensive and well structured introduction to this complex topic and covers all the key topics.
The certificate course is designed as blended learning and has face-to-face and online phases. The course comprises around 60 teaching units. Participants may expect to spend around 140 hours in total.

Content
Each online module comprises 2-4 teaching units:
- Introduction to plant safety
- Analysis of an accident
- Safety assessment of hazardous substances
- Chemicals regulation
- Authorisation procedures
- Quantitative and qualitative methods of risk analysis
- Fundamentals of detonation physics
- Explosion protection
- Process simulation for assessing plant safety
- Inspections of systems requiring monitoring and other safety-relevant equipment
- Impact analyses
Attendance phases with around 8 teaching units each
- Practical example at BAM Berlin: Demonstration of test facilities at the BAM main site and large-scale tests at the BAM Technical Safety Test Site (BAM TTS)
- Excursion to Ruhrchemie Oberhausen. The plant is a chemical park with seven manufacturing chemical companies. We plan to visit production facilities, the process and plant safety department and workshops for testing and overhauling ESMR safety equipment.

Target Groups
This certificate course is aimed at young professionals with a Master's degree in process engineering or equivalent.
Requirements
The following conditions apply to registration, participation, examination and awarding of certificates:
- A Master's degree or equivalent in the field of process engineering or comparable is required.
- Full attendance of the two attendance phases and at least 75% attendance of the online phases are required for the certificate of attendance.
- The type of examination (written, oral, presentation) will be determined at the beginning of the course.
- Participants who fail the exam will be offered one opportunity to retake it.
- In order to pass the examination, more than 50% of the maximum number of points must be achieved.
- An examination certificate is issued if the examination is successfully passed.

- Attendance phase 1 Kick-Off in Berlin: Friday, 26 April 2024 08:00-18:00, meeting point at the main BAM site in Berlin-Steglitz
- Attendance phase 2 Excursion to Ruhrchemie in Oberhausen: 14.06.2024. Exact time and meeting point will be announced
- Lectures online live via Webex, Fridays 12:00-15:30, 03.05.-19.07.2024 (no lecture on 10.05.)
- Exam and feedback session online live via Webex on the last lecture date
General Information
- Participants need a Master's degree in process engineering or equivalent.
- Maximum of 30 participants.
- Registration deadline is 15.03.2024.
- Language of instruction is German.
- A valid official ID is required for access to the BAM site and the industrial site.
- The respective house rules and rules of use apply on the premises, which you will be given opportunity to inspect before entering.
- Travelling to and from the event and any overnight stays are at your own expense. Coffee breaks, snacks and transfers between different course locations on the days of attendance are included in the participation fee.
