Static and dynamic seals are often the source of single‑point failures and therefore represent key components for a safe and reliable hydrogen economy. Fluoropolymers such as FKM- and PTFE‑based seals are currently preferred in many hydrogen applications due to their resistance to explosive decompression and wear. Developing more sustainable materials for these components presents an important and challenging new direction.
The goal of this multinational and interdisciplinary project is to evaluate the performance of alternative polymer sealing materials—materials with a significantly lower overall CO₂ footprint—under a range of static and dynamic conditions in both cryogenic and high‑pressure hydrogen environments.
This research was conducted within the SusSeal4H2 project, “Sustainable and Hydrogen-Compatible Sealing Materials for Safe H₂ Supply Networks”, supported by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space under funding code 01DR23001. The associated SICORP joint research project (JPMJSC2121) received support from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
In this event, all project partners—BAM, Kyushu University, Freudenberg Technology Innovation and NOK Corporation—will present the key results of the overall project. The program will be complemented by invited lectures from academia and industry.
