BAM's Nondestructive Testing Department is currently seeking a student (f/m/d) for a master’s thesis on
"Augmenting Transfer Learning with Semantic Embedding in Material Research for Civil Engineering"
Background
Concrete is the most often utilized construction material worldwide. In order to reduce its huge carbon footprint more sustainable concretes must be discovered and characterized. The characteristics of the material make the lab research really slow, and it has been demonstrated that with the use of Sequential Learning this research can be optimized in time and therefore resources.
You will support a project that creates the groundwork for material discovery using a computer aid approach.
Your tasks
The main task will be to implement a tool that allows for optimization of both 1) semantic implementation using embeddings and 2) machine learning model design. The thesis work consists of creating tools to systemize knowledge. You will learn how to apply machine learning, data analysis, and ontology embedding technique in practice and study the theoretical background. You will obtain a broad understanding of the challenges of task-driven approaches in material science through your work and will learn possible solutions. Your primary tools are Python and GitLab. You will be taught how to use semantic tools like Protegé.
If you have
- Programming skills in Python, Java
- Interest in machine learning and semantic web technologies
- An independent approach to work
- Team spirit
- Good knowledge of German and/or English
We offer
- With its interesting and diverse areas of work, as well as its modern infrastructure, BAM offers outstanding working conditions – including an attractive location.
- Qualifications, commitment, and motivation are the keys for us to accomplish our tasks. BAM promotes employee satisfaction through autonomous work and maximum flexibility. This is supported by various methods for personal and professional further development.
- A good working environment is important to us. We place great value on good working conditions and the compatibility of career and family. For this reason, family-friendly measures are already well established at BAM. We offer our employees flexible working hours, tailored part-time patterns, remote home working, and sabbaticals
- Promoting youth development is particularly close to our hearts. Various programs for young scientists and a multitude of trainee roles form the springboard for a successful professional career
- Our researchers have access to cutting-edge technical equipment at BAM's four locations. Some of the testing installations are unique, i.e. in Europe, or even in the world. We are very interested in exchanges with other research institutes and work in national and international networks. We partner with universities, non-university research institutes, and industrial companies in this respect.
- We invest a lot to identify scientific talent, secure the services of those individuals, and support their development. As well as providing the opportunity to write bachelor’s, diploma and master’s theses at BAM, we support our scientists with a program for doctoral students, a post-doctoral program, and the Adolf Martens Fellowship Program. For committed applicants, we can offer flexible and modern working arrangements, for example in chemistry, physics, biology, and material sciences, and in a range of engineering subjects.
