I am Farnaz Emamverdi and a third year PhD student in BAM. I joined BAM around 4 years ago when I was a master student in polymer science. Here I did an internship and wrote my master thesis in the Physical and Chemical Analysis of Polymers division. Currently the focus of my PhD project is on polymeric Mixed Matrix Membranes for gas separation. In my research, a I learn about dielectric spectroscopy and structure-property relationship in nanocomposites. Learning about new material has been always very interesting for me as well as new characterization techniques to find out more about them.
Coming from Iran and growing up in a (to some extent) conservative family, the first challenge as a female scientist for me was to overcome the stereotypes and clichés on gender role in my mind. I think if we can be free of gender discriminations in our head, the half on the way is already paved. Because then we can leave the expectations of society behind and do the research work for science itself, which was the first goal with all its beauty and of course the challenges regarding discovering the unknown.
I think what is very helpful these days is a network of female scientists that support and learn from each other. In the last decades the portion of women in science has increased a lot however this is not the case for leadership position. I hope in close future this will change and there will be more equality in all ranking position for women and men in science.
