The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

You are working on the project "Drone-based Application of Passive Smart Dust for the Localization of Chemical Hazards". The goal of the project is the development and validation of a new measurement method for the detection and localization of chemical hazards in soil, such as petroleum products, toxins, or abandoned explosives:

  • Development, production, and characterization of the Passive Smart Dust (PSD) in the laboratory
  • Development and testing of a drone-based deployment system for the PSD
  • Production of surrogate contamination surfaces including subsequent decontamination
  • Development and validation of algorithms for localizing chemical hazardous substances
  • Planning and realization of field tests at the BAM Test Site Technical Safety (BAM TTS) for validating the methodology in the field incl. first tests of a drone-based field sampling
  • Publication, presentation, and documentation of the results in scientific articles, reports and at national and international conferences

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies (Master's degree or equivalent) in the field of chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, or a related field with a very good grade
  • Practical knowledge in preparative, organic synthesis
  • Experience in particle synthesis, surface derivatization and characterization would be helpful
  • Experience in chemosensors, sensor technology, and programming are advantageous
  • Programming skills in, e.g., Python are desired
  • A basic affinity for technology and technical systems is essential
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English is a prerequisite
  • Good skills in scientific writing and presenting in front of an audience
  • Good communication and Information behaviour, initiative/commitment, willingness and ability to make decisions, ability to work in a team/willingness to cooperate and willingness to learn
