The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Your responsibilities include:

Scientific work on the project "In-situ tomography with extended dynamic range for the process optimisation of ceramic multilayer systems" (isi-HDR):

  • Development and application of X-ray tomographic methods for the non-destructive characterisation of ceramic multilayer systems (LTCCs)
  • Design and fabrication of LTCC test structures
  • Sintering experiments and shrinkage measurements on LTCCs
  • Development of an approach to use multiple X-ray beam energies for dynamic range extension
  • In-situ tomographic imaging to study the shrinkage process of ceramics during firing
    Development of software for statistical analysis of data sets (algorithms for the detection of volume changes and for the quantification of the morphology of pores and cracks)
  • Collaboration with internal and external groups and presentation of own activity through presentations, publications and reports
  • Active participation in the BAM topic area Analytical Science

Your qualifications:

  • University degree (diploma/ master) in the field of materials science, solid state physics, engineering physics, physics or comparable
  • Practical experience in the performance and evaluation of X-ray computed tomographic measurements
  • Basic knowledge of signal processing
  • Basic knowledge of ceramic materials and technologies
  • Very good knowledge of English (spoken and written) is required; good knowledge of German is advantageous
  • General technical understanding and experimental skills are advantageous
  • Knowledge of one or more programming languages relevant to the task (e.g. Python, Matlab) is advantageous
  • Basic knowledge of X-ray diffraction is advantageous
  • Goal-oriented and structured way of working, high level of initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team/willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn as well as conceptual and interdisciplinary thinking skills
