The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

Hydrogen is regarded as an ideal alternative energy carrier to fossil fuels as its combustion produces water as the only product. One of the most promising methods to produce high-purity hydrogen is electrocatalytic water splitting, which primarily involves the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Efficient, robust, and inexpensive electrocatalysts are necessary for driving these reactions at high rates and at low overpotentials to minimize energetic losses. This project will study the electrocatalytic activity of conductive phosphonate-based metal–organic frameworks towards HER. Additionally, the project will seek a complete understanding of catalytic structure−function relationships through state-of-the-art in situ/operando characterization techniques including in situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Specific tasks within the project “Design and Mechanism of Phosphonate Metal–Organic Framework-Based Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction“ include:

  • Design and synthesis of phosphonate-functionalized organic ligands
  • Synthesis and characterization of MOFs using phosphonate-based organic linkers
  • Study the electrochemical functional properties of synthesized MOFs
  • Investigate the electrochemical reactions by synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy
  • Documentation, evaluation and interpretation of data
  • Publication, presentation and documentation of the results in scientific articles, reports and at national and international conferences
  • Supervision of junior academic staff (e.g. BSc/MSc students)

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies (Master's degree or equivalent) in the field of chemistry or a cognate disciplin In the case of foreign educational qualifications, please send us the relevant proof of equivalence with a German qualification.   • Experiences in small organic molecule synthesis and their characterization by different analytical techniques
  • Knowledge of MOFs synthesis is beneficial
  • Knowledge of X-ray diffraction is beneficial
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English is a prerequisite
  • Good skills in scientific writing and presenting in front of an audience
  • Good communication and Information behaviour, initiative/commitment, willingness and ability to make decisions, ability to work in a Team/willingness to cooperate and willingness to learn
