The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

Processing of the research project AbifFa "Surface functionalisation 2.0. algae biofilm facades for cleaner air and an improved urban climate" in the Zukunft Bau programme. Your tasks include in particular:

  • Design and planning of experiments
  • Design, implementation, and evaluation of biofilm experiments in the laboratory and in the field
  • Optimisation of the environmental simulation system (HI-Tension)
  • Determination of growth and biodeterioration rates for material-colonising microorganisms (phototrophic and heterotrophic)
  • Cooperation with material scientists, environmental scientists and biologists from various disciplines
  • Data evaluation and interpretation of own results in an international research context
  • Writing scientific publications and reports and presenting the results at scientific conferences

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed academic university degree (Master's degree or diploma) in the field of materials science with a focus on heritage conservation or a comparable field of study
  • PhD in biology and applied biotechnology with a focus on heritage conservation and lichenology or microbiology
  • Several years of experience in working with environmentally exposed inorganic surfaces (stones, monuments, building facades)
  • Extensive experience with laboratory and field experiments as well as in the corresponding investigation and analysis methods
  • Proven experience in the assessment and monitoring of exposed inorganic surfaces, with a particular emphasis on the effectiveness of the measures
  • Very good command of written and spoken English
  • Good knowledge of German, both written and spoken, is an advantage
  • Willingness for interdisciplinary cooperation and further training
  • Publications in peer-reviewed, scientific journals as first author and experience in oral presentations at international, scientific congresses
  • Good communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and structures way of working, initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team, conceptual and innovative thinking skills
