Research Assistant (m/f/d) in the field of applied mathematics, physics, or any engineering (with extensive knowledge of mathematics)

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Development and consolidation of the key research area on mathematical and numerical methods for non-destructive testing as well as its strategic development for eddy current, ultrasound, thermography testing, etc.
  • Acquisition and management of third-party funded research projects on application of mathematical methods in non-destructive testing of safety-relevant components as well as development of project ideas
  • Development of algorithms for solving wave and diffusion equations using numerical methods
  • Development and implementation of methods for signal analysis and inverse determination of parameters from measured values, application of AI approaches, data fusion
  • Active participation in existing scientific networks, establishing of new networks
  • Supervision of PhD students and early stage researchers
  • Advising scientists of the department on the application of numerical methods

Your qualifications:

  • University degree in applied mathematics, physics, or any engineering science (with extensive knowledge of mathematics, Master or higher) with excellent results
  • PhD is prefered
  • Excellent scientific qualification and experience in the implementation of numerical methods and inverse methods
  • Experience in machine learning is advantageous
  • Experience in applying for and managing of public funded research projects
  • Experience in supervising early stage researchers and leading project teams
  • Programming experience with MatLab and Python is requiered
  • Experience in using commercial FE tools (Comsol, Ansys) is an advantage
  • Very good language skills in German and English
  • Good communication and Information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, willingness and ability to make decisions, ability to work in a team/willingness to cooperate and conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
