The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Research activities using and further developing methods of material informatics
  • Application-oriented, innovative basic research on mechanically induced processes in energetic materials in a combination of computer-aided and experimental investigations
  • Processing of internal and external test orders
  • Supervision of interdisciplinary projects
  • Active participation in the further development of BAM's thematic fields
  • Development of own research topics and acquisition and management of third-party funded research projects
  • Positioning BAM as a departmental research institution through participation in national and international standardisation bodies, advisory boards and scientific networks
  • Expansion of existing and initiation of new cooperations with national and international partner institutions
  • Supervision of young scientists
  • Presentation of results at conferences and relevant events as well as pronounced publication activity

Your qualifications:

  • Successful scientific universitiy degree in the field of chemistry and a very good PhD
  • Several years of professional experience as a postdoc with evidence of outstanding achievements in the relevant subject area
  • International experience in the field of research on energetic materials, which is demonstrated by a continuous research stay abroad of at least one year during or after the doctoral studies
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the application of quantum chemical calculations
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the development of ab initio models for predicting the sensitivity of energetic materials to initiation by mechanical actions
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in combining and developing both experimental and theoretical approaches to address challenges in solid state reactivity
  • Knowledge and practical experience in the use of laboratory and large-scale equipment (e.g. synchrotron and neutron sources) to characterise the atomic structure of materials, including the characterisation of materials under extreme mechanical stress (e.g. high pressure)
  • Experience in acquisition and management of F&E-projects and corresponding scientific project management
  • Proven outstanding publication activity in the field of mechanical reactivity of materials with a special focus on energetic materials (e.g. Web of Science reference)
  • Experience in supervision of young scientists
  • Very good oral and written expression skills in English
  • Very good oral and written expression skills in German are desirable. If this language skill is not available, the willingness to learn German is assumed
  • Very good knowledge of software technology and the use of HPC infrastructure
  • Very good knowledge of several programming languages (e.g. Python, C ++)
  • Good communication and Information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, willingness and ability to make decisions, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate as well as conceptual, willingness to learn, strategic and innovative thinking skills
