The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

Scientific collaboration in the European joint research project 20NRM04 MetrIAQ "Metrology for the determination of emissions of dangerous substances from building materials into indoor air", which is funded within the framework of the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) and coordinated by BAM. In the project, reference materials and certified reference gases are to be developed for the quality assurance of test methods for the determination of gaseous emissions from building materials and other products that can be used indoors. The overall objective is to improve the European metrological infrastructure in the field of materials emissions testing. Your tasks will involve:

  • Technical and organisational management of the work package “Development of constantly emitting reference material (ERM) and gaseous primary and certified reference materials (gPRM and gCRM) to improve the QA/QC of the emission test chamber method according to EN 16516”
  • Characterisation of the candidate reference materials with regard to source strength, emission profile and stability as well as reproducibility of the production in close cooperation with the consortium partners
  • Carrying out emission measurements in emission test chambers and analysing the test chamber air using thermal desorption gas chromatography (TD-GC) and HPLC
  • Preparation of test specimens for these investigations
  • Organisation of an inter-laboratory comparison for the validation of the candidate reference materials
  • Supporting the coordinator in scientific and administrative activities (organising project meetings, writing publications and reports, knowledge transfer, activities within the framework of the project objectives)

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university studies (diploma, master's degree or equivalent) in the field of materials science, chemistry or a comparable discipline
  • Doctorate is an advantage
  • Good expertise in the field of active sampling and analysis of airborne volatile organic compounds (VVOC, VOC, SVOC) by GC/MS, GC/FID with thermodesorption as well as HPLC.
  • High level of analytical chemistry background knowledge
  • Instrumental analytical and manual skills
  • Very good knowledge in the field of validation of measurement methods
  • Knowledge in the calculation, if necessary modelling of mass transport processes in materials
  • Experience in the largely independent processing of third-party funded projects
  • Very good knowledge of German and English, both written and spoken
  • Good skills in scientific writing and presenting in front of an audience
  • Good communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, willingness and ability to make decisions, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, flexibility as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
