PhD Student (m/f/d) in the field of physics, chemistry, materials science, physical engineering, photonics, computational engineering science or a comparable subject

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Your responsibilities include:

  • Optimization of a LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) system for the investigation of building materials
  • Development of a demonstrator for the automated, sensor-based sorting of construction and building material waste
  • Combination and implementation of a simultaneous LIBS and multispectral optical measurement techniques and joint/simultaneous data analysis
  • Conducting experiments and development of data analysis techniques for sorting of different materials and identifying disruptive substances, developing and verifying the methodology
  • Coordination and cooperation with the partners in the research network
  • Presentation of research results in reports, peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences and meetings

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed academic scientific degree (diploma, master) in the field of physics, chemistry, materials science, physical engineering, photonics, computational engineering science or a comparable subject
  • Very good knowledge in spectroscopy
  • Very good knowledge of a programming languages (e.g. Python, C, Matlab, LabVIEW) as well as willingness to learn a new programming language
  • Good knowledge of hardware automation and measurement data acquisition
  • Good knowledge of chemometric methods and their application
  • Practical experience in planning, setting up and optimization of optical systems and in performing, evaluation and assessing spectroscopic measurements are preferable
  • Basic knowledge and experience in the field of building materials and recycling are preferable
  • Experience in the management of research projects is preferable
  • Very good and precise language skills / expressiveness in German and English, both spoken and written
  • Objective-oriented and structured way of working, initiative / willingness and ability to work, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn
