research assistant (m/f/d) in the field of materials engineering / data science

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Your responsibilities include:

  • ontological description of data sets from material mechanics experiments with semantic methods
  • conception of workflows for the associated metadata acquisition (including sample history, test conditions) in collaboration with laboratory staff
  • development of a concept for classifying the quality of data from material mechanics experiments
  • identification of corresponding reference data from data pools with external/incomplete data sets based on the available metadata
  • processing of data sets according to the developed data concepts
  • standardisation of formats and development of interfaces for the exchange of data sets within the joint project

Your qualifications:

  • completed scientific university studies (diploma/Master's degree) in materials engineering (with programming experience), mechanical engineering, physical engineering, materials informatics, data science (with materials engineering focus) or comparable
  • doctorate in a relevant field is an advantage
  • in-depth experience with material mechanics experiments, in particular interpretation and automated evaluation of generated data
  • experience in the use of data to fit material mechanics models is an advantage
  • good knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g. Python, R)
  • experience in data analysis and statistical evaluation
  • experience in setting up and using databases (SQL, NoSQL)
  • experience of working in interdisciplinary teams
  • very good teamwork and communication skills
  • very good knowledge of German and English
