The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

  • Coordination and implementation of research activities in the field of in-situ process monitoring of build-up processes using additive manufacturing with laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and quantitative thermography
  • Collaboration in the development and set-up of a research system for additive manufacturing using L-PBF
  • Integration of cameras for optical tomography into the L-PBF system
  • Development of measurement and evaluation methods for in-situ emissivity determination using SWIR and MWIR cameras and for geometric calibration of camera systems using tilt shift optics
  • Performance of numerical simulations with simplified models for investigating the dependence of temperature transients on component geometry and scanning strategy
  • Development of reference building processes for the targeted production of test specimens with defects and systematic data acquisition with thermography and optical tomography during the reference building processes
  • Use of suitable reference methods to detect defects and inhomogeneities
  • Development of data analysis procedures based on methods of AI for the correlation of the detected defects with process parameters and with results of in-situ monitoring
  • Development of control loops for process optimization
  • Coordination and application of third-party funded research projects
  • Supervision of young scientists (student assistants, bachelor and master theses)
  • Development and maintenance of an international network for in-situ monitoring in additive manufacturing
  • Publication of the results in national and international peer-reviewed journals as well as presentations at conferences and meetings

Your qualifications:

  • University degree (diploma/master) with a very good rating in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physical engineering or comparable
  • Extensive knowledge and many years of experience in the production and evaluation of metallic components using additive manufacturing
  • Extensive knowledge of optical and electronic measurement technology in non-destructive testing
  • Experience in in-situ thermography and optical tomography
  • Extensive experience in programming with Matlab, Python or similar scripting languages
  • Experimental skills and innovative spirit
  • Very good German and English language skills, spoken and written
  • Strong ability to work in a team, social competence and personal responsibility
