Ph.D. Student (m/f/d) in the field of material science, chemistry, mineralogy or other related subject areas

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Development of an experimental setup for the combinatorial design of metallic alloys
  • Property screening of alloy mixtures in the system Fe-Ni-Cr-Co and Fe-Ni-Cr-Mn with respect to their damage behaviour at high temperatures and in aqueous media
  • Identification of the optimal chemical composition for the reduction of material loss by
    high temperature corrosion and damage by aqueous corrosion
  • Publication of the results in peer-reviewed journals
  • Presentation of the results in national and international conferences

Your qualifications:

  • University degree (Master/Diploma) in material science, chemistry, mineralogy or other related subject areas. In the case of foreign educational qualifications, we request that you send us the corresponding proof of equivalence with a German qualification.   • Knowledge on elementary mechanisms of high temperature oxidation and aqueous corrosion processes
  • Practical experience in powder metallurgy and metallography
  • Knowledge on the operating principles of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and surface analysis methods (X-Ray Photon Spectroscopy (XPS), Time-of-flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) etc.), hands-on experience will be advantageous
  • Excellent command of the English language in writing and presentation is a prerequisite
  • Good ability in scientific writing and in presenting in front of an audience
  • High degree of motivation and commitment, capacity for co-operation and team spirit as well as mobility and creativity for working in an interdisciplinary scientific environment
