The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences. Your responsibilities include:

  • Participating in a cooperation project with partners from science and industry within the Werner-von-Siemens Center for Industry and Science. The task is to develop an ultrasonic method for assessing used turbine blades from gas turbines. The phased array technique will be applied. The task is suitable for preparing a PhD thesis.
  • Development of a new examination method and integration into an existing measuring system
  • Development of signal processing algorithms for the evaluation and representation of measurement results
  • Design and implementation of a robot system
  • Collaboration with colleges from BAM and with project partners
  • Publication of the results in national and international journals and at conferences
  • Supervision of young scientists (guidance of student assistants and supervision of theses)

Your qualifications:

  • Finished university studies (diploma/master's degree) in the field of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physical engineering, mechatronics, physics or similar
  • Experience in non-destructive testing with ultrasound, preferably with phased array technology, (e.g. acquired through a thesis, professional activity or major field of study) are helpful
  • In-depth programming knowledge (Matlab, C++ or comparable), in particular experience with hardware oriented programming
  • Experimental skills
  • Knowledge in using industrial robots is desirable
  • Ability to carry out scientific work in a determined and independent manner
  • Personal commitment, as well as team and communication skills
  • Good German and English language skills
