The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

  • Collaboration in a publicly funded research project on the monitoring of hydrogen pressure vessels with non-destructive ultrasonic testing methods
  • Development of a method for online monitoring (structural health monitoring) of pressure vessels during operation at operating pressures of up to 700 bar
  • Development and construction of a demonstrator on real pressure vessels for the storage of hydrogen for the automotive industry
  • Analysis of the propagation of guided ultrasonic waves in the vessel wall and the influence of environmental conditions on the sound propagation, both experimentally and with accompanying numerical methods
  • Preparation and coordination of extensive test series to generate training data for AI algorithms
  • Collaboration in the development of signal processing methods, primarily on the basis of machine learning and AI
  • Collaboration in an interdisciplinary research team

Your qualifications:

  • Completed scientific university studies (Master or Diploma) in the field of physics or an engineering science, e.g. physical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or cf.
  • A completed doctorate is desirable
  • Experience in the fields of acoustics/sound propagation or non-destructive testing with ultrasound or structural heath monitoring
  • Knowledge in the field of fibre-reinforced composites and in the application of numerical methods for the simulation of physical relationships is an advantage
  • Programming skills (e.g. Matlab or Python)
  • Willingness to supervise junior researchers
  • Interest and enjoyment in working independently and in developing new ideas and solutions
  • Good communication and information skills, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/willingness and ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
