The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Processing and registration of sensor measurement data (thermography, optical tomography, melt pool monitoring) from additive manufacturing processes to generate training and validation data sets
  • Development of evaluation algorithms for correlating measurement data with results of reference measurements (µ-CT, EBSD)
  • Development of methods for automated image processing using AI-based algorithms to determine and comparatively evaluate the detectability of defects, e.g. by RNNs
  • Digital integration of the data analysis into the higher-level data management system of the process monitoring sensor system
  • Collaboration with colleagues from the field of materials science analyses
  • Publication of results in national and international journals as well as at conferences and meetings
  • Supervision of young scientists (guidance of student assistants and supervision of theses)

Your qualifications:

  • Completed university studies (diploma/master's degree) in mathematics, computer science, mechanical engineering, physical engineering, physics or comparable
  • Prerequisite is extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of AI-supported solution methods, e.g. acquired through a thesis or through past professional activity
  • Prerequisite is very good practical programming experience, preferably in Python, and advanced knowledge of relevant AI frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
  • Knowledge in the field of non-contact temperature measurement technology and/or optical measurement technology is desirable
  • Ability to carry out determined and independent scientific work, personal commitment as well as teamwork and communication skills
  • Very good written and spoken English and German skills are a prerequisite

We offer:

  • Interdisciplinary research at the interface of politics, economics and society
