The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

Within the framework of two research projects for the further development of powder bed-based additive manufacturing processes, AI-supported algorithms are to be developed for the evaluation of in-situ and ex-situ measurement data. This includes the following tasks:

  • Processing and registration of sensor measurement data (thermography, optical tomography, melt pool monitoring) from additive manufacturing processes to generate training and validation data sets
  • Development of evaluation algorithms for correlating measurement data with results of reference measurements (µ-CT, EBSD)
  • Development of methods for automated image processing using AI-based algorithms to determine and comparatively evaluate the detectability of defects, e.g. by RNNs
  • Digital integration of the data analysis into the higher-level data management system of the process monitoring sensor system
  • Collaboration with colleagues from the field of materials science analyses
  • Publication of results in national and international journals as well as at conferences and meetings
  • Supervision of young scientists (guidance of student assistants and supervision of theses)

Your qualifications:

  • Completed university studies (diploma/master's degree) in mathematics, computer science, mechanical engineering, physical engineering, physics or comparable
  • Prerequisite is extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of AI-supported solution methods, e.g. acquired through a thesis or through past professional activity
  • Prerequisite is very good practical programming experience, preferably in Python, and advanced knowledge of relevant AI frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
  • Knowledge in the field of non-contact temperature measurement technology and/or optical measurement technology is desirable
  • Ability to carry out determined and independent scientific work, personal commitment as well as teamwork and communication skills
  • Very good written and spoken English and German skills are a prerequisite
