The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

BAM is currently strengthening its research and development activities along the national and European hydrogen strategy. The tasks of this position are in the field of sensor concepts of the test platform "hydrogen fuelling station", which BAM is setting up as a real-scale laboratory within the framework of research project.

You will be part of an interdisciplinary team that offers diverse opportunities to work at the interface between research and application in the field of hydrogen technologies.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Working in a multidisciplinary team to develop methods for structural health monitoring (SHM) on pressurised components of our test platform "Hydrogen Fuelling Station" with focus on: SHM methods using guided ultrasonic waves
  • Integration of SHM methods into the test platform and validation of reliability
  • Development and testing of sensor concepts and signal processing approaches
  • Studies of ultrasound propagation in the components to be monitored by means of numerical methods (finite element simulation)
  • Integrating the monitoring systems into the digital infrastructure of the test platform and supporting the design of a digital twin

Your qualifications:

  • Completed scientific university studies (master's degree or diploma) in physics, physical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering or equivalent
  • Programming skills in Matlab or Python are required
  • Doctorate is preferred
  • Willingness to supervise early career researchers is expected
  • Physical understanding of wave propagation in solids or advanced knowledge in acoustics/ultrasonic engineering
  • Experimental skills and enthusiasm for working in the lab and in the field
  • Good communication and information skills, goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
