In the Weld Mechanics division, the thermal, mechanical and corrosive-related stresses placed upon joined components during production and during operation are investigated.

We evaluate the integrity of weld joints by means of component tests and laboratory studies. We have at our disposal special testing equipment capable of operating in three dimensions with different load ranges.

Our research activities concentrate on quantifying the relationships between materials and engineering. In addition to tests on cracking behaviour under low and high temperatures, we also analyse hydrogen transport in metallic materials and develop new simulation models for the numerical calculation of weld-related deformation and stresses or for the numerical analysis of material degradation as caused by hydrogen.

We develop new alloy concepts for welding additives to enable innovative materials to be joined in a manner consistent with the expected stresses and with a high quality.
