The task of the Nanomaterial Technologies division is to increase the practical safety of surface functionality using laser-based techniques in the topical fields of materials processing, laser safety and the preservation of cultural assets.

Femtosecond or nanosecond laser pulses offer the means to establish nanostructures with structural widths beneath the refraction limits of traditional optical technology. This enables surfaces to be designed for specific functions and to be adapted to the needs of various technical and biomedical tasks. This technique offers a remarkably high level of flexibility in terms of the achievable geometry and the materials.

In addition to projects on current topics, this division also offers laser resistance testing and damage threshold measurements. The division also investigates the potential for employing lasers to clean dirty or contaminated surfaces.
