The Surface Analysis and Interfacial Chemistry division engages in the development and application of advanced techniques for imaging micro analysis and surface chemical analysis in all technical areas in which surface technology is used or new materials are developed. Such analytical methods are offered across multiple scales, ranging from 10 nanometres to a few tens of micrometres. As part of the division’s mandate in Metrology in Chemistry, new methodology for the establishment of traceability chains is developed.

Quality management in this analytical context is underpinned by means of metrological and pre-standardisation research, the development and maintenance of standards, the organisation of inter-laboratory comparisons and workshops, and the provision of Certified Reference Materials.

The education of qualified personnel in the field of microanalytics and surface analytics is promoted by facilitating doctoral research (jointly with universities) and post-doctoral fellowships.
