The emission and introduction of pollutants can endanger the safety of people, the environment and products. In the Materials and Air Pollutants division, we concentrate on identifying pollutant emissions from materials into the air and also the effects of the introduction of pollutants when materials and the environment interact with one another.

For this purpose, we develop and use emission measurement chambers and suitable analytical methods to qualitatively and quantitatively measure airborne substances. This encompasses in particular volatile organic compounds in a broad volatility spectrum as well as selected inorganic compounds (e.g. ozone, radon), and also fine to ultra-fine particles and aerosols. To this end, we develop testing methods to identify airborne pollutants and perform investigations on damage analyses, material optimisation and material protection.
