The use of synthetic substances in chemistry and engineering comes along with the dispersion of these substances in the environment, namely in water, soil and air. In order to identify contamination and reliably quantify it, it is necessary to develop, validate and standardise powerful and reliable analytical techniques. Certified Reference Materials and traceable methods play a major role here.

The Environmental Analysis division achieves this in conjunction with the complementary study fields of immunoanalytics (antibody-based methods with high sensitivity and selectivity) and chromatographic methods. Because contaminants in the environment are subject to chemical and biological transformationions, chromatographic meth-ods encompass not only target analysis but also non-target analysis to identify transformation products and metabolites.
