BAM promotes junior researchers through various measures including its doctorate program. Around 160 doctoral candidates are currently working at BAM, completing their qualifications in natural sciences or engineering.

The doctorate is generally awarded at a university under the supervision of a BAM scientist who teaches at the respective university. Doctorates can also be awarded through third-party-funded research projects. Contracts of employment are drafted as fixed-term contracts according to the WissZeitVG provisions. Payment is in line with TVÖD.
