Valves and pipelines

Hydrogen poses special challenges for materials and components. BAM is conducting research on the safe operation of pipelines in a new type of test platform.

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is launching a survey on the safe operation of hydrogen and hydrogen-natural gas pipelines. It is aimed at experts from industry and research in order to consider current and future questions, needs and priorities before setting up a corresponding test infrastructure.

BAM was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action (BMWK) to set up a test platform for hydrogen and hydrogen-natural gas pipelines. The facility is intended to provide industry, science and gas grid operators with the opportunity to solve technical issues quickly and in a practical manner, and overall to significantly accelerate the market ramp-up of hydrogen in Germany. The test platform will consist of various modules and cover a spectrum of testing possibilities that is unique in Europe. The focus will be on tests that have to be carried out on a real scale as well as those that have to be carried out under critical operating conditions (with regard to pressure, temperature, mechanical and thermal loads, e.g. during repair welding). The survey, which aims to identify existing research needs in more detail beforehand, will run until 31 July 2022.
