State Secretary Andreas Feicht, responsible for energy policy at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), visited the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) today to learn more about safety-related research in the energy sector.

During a conversation, BAM president Prof. Ulrich Panne and the State Secretary shared their thoughts on the broad range of tasks the federal research institution tackles. They discussed BAM's projects in the energy focus area, which include offshore wind turbine safety, the safe storage of hydrogen as an energy carrier, the safe transport of lithium batteries and the nuclear disposal of highly radioactive waste – an area that has been one of BAM's core competencies for decades.

After the meeting, State Secretary Feicht signed BAM's Golden Book.

During a tour, he also had an opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the projects: BAM scientists Marc Thiele and Pablo Cuéllar demonstrated ongoing tests on the material fatigue of wind turbines and research aimed at improving the load-bearing capacity of their piled foundations. State Secretary Feicht was particularly impressed by BAM's research and international network.
