Together for an economically strong Azerbaijan: AZAK, DAkkS and BAM

In early February, a high-ranking delegation from Azerbaijan visited BAM in the framework of an EU funded Twinning Project between the Azerbaijan accreditation office (AZAK) and the German National Accreditation office DAkkS GmbH. The main objective of the visit was to sensitize members from the national parliament as well as government officials for the significance of the EU-VO 765 concerning national accreditation bodies and their need for political and legislative support. Finally a functioning and internationally recognised accreditation system can contribute to the further economic and social development of Azerbaijan.

BAM’s Accreditation and Conformity Assessment Section provided the visitors with an insight into the tasks and functions of the Accreditation Advisory Board (AKB). The AKB consists of various expert boards, performing advisory functions for the DAkkS on the basis of the German National Accreditation Body Act. Apart from conformity assessment and accreditation, the delegation also learned about BAM’s research activities in materials engineering and the technology of construction materials. The guided lab tours provided insights into the detection of material fatigue in aircraft turbines and in BAM’s large testing hall the stability testing of offshore wind turbines could be experienced by the group. After all the guests from Azerbaijan expressed their gratitude and were deeply impressed with BAM’s research activities. The delegation finally expressed the importance for more scientific exchange, with particular interest for the PhD programme of BAM as well as the possibility to send junior scientific staff for internships.
