BAM`s focus topic for the 2018 Long Night of the Sciences was ‘Invisible phenomena’. Scientists gave the large number of visitors an insight into their research work at the Adlershof site. 18 exciting experiments in chemistry and materials science tempted both adults and children to marvel, touch and understand.

About floating droplets, heat selfies and alcoholic chocolates

The visitors could watch how crystals were formed ‘live’ on floating droplets and learn how crystallisation processes play an important role in the production of medicines.

They were fascinated by a photo of a different kind, a ‘heat selfie’ using a thermographic camera – and of course they could take it home. The colourful pictures clearly showed the heat differences on the photo model and offered a good introduction to the use of such technology. Thermographic methods are used to detect hidden cracks or damage in structures.

Does an alcoholic chocolate make one drunk? Visitors were able to answer this question directly as ‘panellists’ in the breath analysis tests run by the Berlin police. BAM supply the required alcoholic-water solutions for calibrating the measuring devices to guarantee that the results of the breath tests are really accurate when police carry out traffic controls. By the way: many guests were astounded by the measurement results after consuming an alcoholic chocolate.

Schoolgirls on a science tour

The schoolgirls who attended the first ‘Schoolgirls Tour: Long Night of Female Scientists’ programme offered by the Humboldt University (HU), IGAFA and BAM, were amazed. Schoolgirls from the tenth to twelfth classes had an exclusive tour on physics, geography, computer science and chemistry. In addition, they had the unique opportunity of being able to question an Adlershof female scientist and obtain important tips on exciting career prospects in science.

Chilling in the Science Lounge

If energy reserves had to be replaced or there was a thirst for knowledge, BAM`s “Science Lounge” was where visitors enjoyed refreshing drinks and delicious snacks such as bratwurst, corn on the cob, crêpes or ice cream and relaxed to gentle music which helped create a unique atmosphere for the Long Night of the Sciences on BAM`s Adlershof site. Thanks to the commitment and dedication of BAM’s staff, this year’s smartest night was another successful event.
