Biodeterioration and Reference Organisms

To strengthen our team in the division “Biodeterioration and Reference Organisms”
in Berlin-Steglitz,
starting 1 November 2017, we are looking for a

Ph.D. student in Microbiology (f/m)

Salary group 13 TVöD
Temporary contract for 18 months with the option on additional 18 months
part-time employment 65% of the regular working time

Your responsibilities include:

- Experiments on the evolution of biocide resistance, tolerance and cross-resistance against antibiotics in pure cultures of soil bacteria under laboratory conditions
- Experiments on the selection of biocide resistance and antibiotic cross-resistance in complex microbial soil communities
- single-cell experiments on selection of biocide resistance and tolerance in native soil bacteria
- publication of results in scientific journals and presentation at international conferences
- supervision of students projects

Your qualifications:

- required a completed university’s diploma or master’s degree in biology, microbiology, ecology, environmental sciences or related
- practical experience with growth, competition and killing experiments with microorganisms in the presence of antimicrobial compounds
- practical experience with molecular microbial ecology methods (qPCR and amplicon sequencing)
- practical experience with the determination of microbial activity in soils
- practical experience in single-cell analysis: fluorescence microscopy, microfluidics, and image analysis
- good knowledge in English
