For the department 6 “Materials Protection and Surface Technologies“ in Berlin-Steglitz, starting August 2017, we are looking for a
Python3 programmer for measurement data translation and mechatronics.
Ph.D. or equivalent in Physics, mathematics, electronics/mechatronics or informatics
Salary: Entgeltgruppe E13 TVöD
Full or part-time, fixed-term contract for 2 years
The initial tasks are focused on developing device-specific data translation procedures, which will translate manufacturer-specific measurement- and associated metadata into an open source, HDF5-based structure. The resulting datafiles can then be used for e.g. long-term correlative analysis and archival purposes. For measurement techniques for which no appropriate HDF5 structure exists, new structures must be developed in close collaboration with the relevant scientists. This data translation should be automated as much as possible, to make the workflow as convenient as possible. Convenient manual data entry methods to supply limited amounts of inevitably missing metadata, however, have to be envisioned and realized (for example using web forms or tables).
In an interdisciplinary, scientific environment, we thus hope to establish a prototype for structured data storage and tracking, and to demonstrate its benefits through advanced analytical methods that can exploit this data store. Therefore, further tasks will include joining in the development of our current and upcoming scientific analysis programs, as well as improving the automation and control of our self-developed measurement equipment, for accelerated, multi-technique data collection.
We are looking for a candidate with a Master’s degree in physics, (applied) mathematics, electronics/mechatronics, or informatics, followed by either a Ph.D. study or several years of on-the-job experience after completion of the Master’s degree
We need a candidate with a very thorough knowledge of programming in Python3, and who is decent in (Debian) Linux or Unix-based shell scripting. Experience with PostgreSQL database management and Git version control systems are also desired.
