Topic

Probing the structure of lipid assemblies

Presenter:

Dr Arwen Tyler, University of Leeds, GB

Summary

Lipids exhibit rich polymorphism in water and can adopt phases that may possess 1-, 2- or 3-dimensional periodicity. Curved lipid phases have attracted enormous interest as biocompatible scaffolds for use in a wide range of applications including membrane protein crystallisation, drug delivery, biosensing and as structure-directing templates for high surface area devices. Additionally, dispersions of such structures into nanoparticles are candidates for engineered drug delivery systems, where bioactives can be encapsulated and later released. Finally, oriented nanostructured films can also be prepared for applications such as substrate-mediated delivery. I will present an overview of curved lipid phases, their characterisation with Grazing Incidence and Small Angle Scattering, as well as our efforts to develop engineering rules to understand and control their structural properties for various bio-medical/ technological applications.
