LIBS and LA-ICP-MS are well established techniques for surface analysis. Although these techniques have lasers in common, they evolved separately. The recent merge of both analytical techniques by tandem instruments combined by chemometrics opens new horizons on the analysis of materials.
Together with the German Working Group for Analytical Spectroscopy (DAAS) and Applied Spectra Inc., BAM organizes a first workshop on tandem LIBS/LA-ICP-MS in Europe to bring experts of both techniques (optical and mass spectrometry) into dialogue and to share their experiences and common issues for an effcient tandem analysis. Lectures on fundamentals and applications of LIBS and LA-ICP-MS combined with group demonstrations of instruments and software.
- plasma fundamentals
- instrumentation and tandem concept
- applications on the analysis of polymers, construction materials, and geological and biological samples
This workshop aims at scientists and users of all levels of LIBS and LA-ICP-MS instruments with interest in advanced tandem instrumentations.
Dr. Jhanis Gonzalez, Technical Director, Product R&D and Management at Applied Spectra Inc., has researched on chemical analysis of solid samples with laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and fundamental ablation mechanisms for close to 20 years. He was a Visiting Scientist, Chemist Postdoctoral Fellow, and a Project Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories.
Jhanis’ research, focused on understanding the mechanisms of laser-material interaction through the use of both LIBS and LA-ICP-MS, has helped Applied Spectra remain on the cutting edge of laser chemical analysis. He received his B.S. in Chemistry and his Ph.D. in Area-Physics Chemistry from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Caracas.
